The research on the heat source characteristics and the equivalent heat source of the arc in gaps

•A MHD model of arc in the gaps was set up to analyze the heat source distribution characteristics of the arc.•An ellipsoid and Gaussian surface heat source were proposed to be equivalent to the heat effect of the arc.•The method to determine the parameters of the equivalent heat source was proposed.•An experiment was carried out to prove the accuracy of the proposed model.
