•Non-equilibrium cation distribution is induced by sol-gel auto-combustion synthesis.•Structural and magnetic properties are strongly influenced by cation distribution.•The increase of Zn-concentration induces a significant decrease in coercivity.•Static and dynamic energy losses increase as a function of vertex field.
