High performing and cost-effective metal/metal oxide/metal alloy catalysts/electrodes for low temperature CO2 electroreduction

•This paper gives an overview of catalysts for large-scale CO2 electroreduction.•High performing and cost-effective catalysts are concerned.•Cu-, Sn- and Zn-based catalysts are considered to be the most promising.•Catalysts using single pure metals, metallic oxides, and alloys are described.•Nanostructure and crystallographic orientation are critical for future catalysts.
