•A systematically investigation of DRM mechanism on Ni2Fe overlayer was studied.•The mechanism of FeO oxidation C was proposed.•Carbon deposition is effectively controlled.•The result explains the role of Fe in Ni-based DRM catalysts during DRM reaction.
