•CO2 adsorption on alumina-supported [Emim][Gly] ionic liquid (IL) was analysed.•Relationships between adsorbent properties and CO2 capture data were investigated.•The sorbent CO2 capture capacity monotonically increased with the IL loading.•The sorbent with the highest IL loading showed a greater IL utilisation degree.•Steam regeneration allowed to recover 80% of the sorbent initial capture capacity.
