Machinability Investigation of AISI 304 Austenitic Stainless Steels using Multilayer AlTiN/TiAlN Coated Carbide Inserts

In the present study, multilayer AlTiN/TiAlN coating is used for coating of cemented carbide inserts and those are used for machining of AISI304 austenitic steel with high speed. The cemented carbide inserts used, are fine grained K-Grade (K-20) and the coating is done with cathodic arc deposition technique (PVD). It has been observed that, for the coating thickness of 3.8 μm, the micro hardness of AlTiN/TiAlN was found to be 34 GPa.
