Stability of tree increment in relation to episodic drought in uneven-structured, mixed stands in southwestern Germany

•We analyzed stem growth reactions to the extreme 2003 drought in irregular stands.•Structural and compositional diversity had no influence on increment stability.•Silver fir was more resistant and resilient to drought than Norway spruce.•A higher proportion of Silver fir in the mixture amplified drought sensitivity.•Species composition was more influential than diversity.
