(a, b) Optical images of the Corrosion Product Layer (CPL) of iron archaeological nail constituted of ferrous carbonate matrix in whose are embedded iron sulfides and magnetite strips. (c) These phases show electrical conduction properties although not visibly connected to iron metal.
