•Transport accounts for 17% of Australian greenhouse gas emissions, with road use the biggest source.•Australia is currently committed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions at 2030 by 26–28% on 2005 levels.•Road transport emissions reductions of 40% are potentially achievable, with behaviour change vital.•Adoption of emission standards in line with Europe (or the US) would provide about 60% of the reduction.
