•We test the effects of motivation and memory on the weighting of reference prices.•In an experiment, participants were buyers or sellers, and relied on memory or not.•Participants saw stock price sequences before deciding their neutral trading price.•Buyers and those relying on memory placed less weight on early and high prices.•However, these two groups placed more weight on recent and intermediate prices.
