Failure probability analysis and design comparison of multi-layered SiC-based fuel cladding in PWRs

•Weibull failure model derivation considering the impact of compressive stress on failure probability.•Duplex SiC with inner composite and outer monolith is optimal compared to other designs.•The impact of compressive stress on failure probability should be considered in low cladding internal pressure.•Increasing Weibull parameters can decrease cladding failure probability.•Failure probability is the most sensitive to the change of Weibull modulus.
