•More volatiles retained at low temperatures were detrimental to catalyst activity.•Higher temperature facilitated sustained high methanol conversion.•Increasing pressure promoted durene and coke formation and supressed C1–C4.•WHSV had a similar effect on catalyst performance as pressure.
