•This paper deals with hierarchical sub-units with multistage network processes.•The operational processes of the components are examined.•Various relationships between system efficiency, division efficiency and component efficiency are discussed.•Additive aggregation model is converted into a semidefinite programming problem.•The newly developed models are applied to high-technology industry in China.
