•The wide-band spot and circular spot laser were used in this paper.•The former coating exhibits preferred hardness and wear resistance.•WC-NiCrMo composite coatings were prepared from pre-alloyed powder.•WC particles were uniformly distributed in γ-(Ni, Fe) matrix for both coatings.
