•A finite element model of high-pressure synthesis cavity is established.•Effective design rules for high-pressure cavity assembly are proposed.•Three assemblies are presented and compared.•The temperature field in synthesis cavity is calculated by using FEM.•The formation mechanism of wasteland was studied in detail.
