•Augment standard mechanisms of cultural transmission with explicit account of social learning.•Adults strategically distort their behavior to set examples for children.•The magnitude of the signaling distortion depends on parental influence.•Cultural complementarity does not imply homogeneity in the long run.•Provide evidence on relationship between parental influence and propensity to consume alcohol and tobacco.
