A risk based approach to support the supplying of components in a MTO assembly process

•The manuscript faces the coordination between the availability of a component and its need on the assembly line in a manufacturing MTO context.•This coordination is addressed through the evaluation of the stock out risk of this kind of components.•Uncertainty is considered through the introduction of stochasticity in assembly activity durations and component lead time.
