•Both fast-growing, light demanding species and slower-growing, more shade-tolerant species cause overyielding.•Differences in leaf phenology between deciduous and evergreen species are a major driver of overyielding.•Complementarity in light use contributes to stronger overyielding of mixed forests on poorer soils.
