•Probe L exhibited colorimetric response toward Hg2+.•Probe L showed fluorescence enhancement with an obvious blue shift toward Cu2+.•Probe L can be utilized for selective sensing of Hg2+ and Cu2+ based on the distinct color changes in real samples.
