•A variable complexity online sequential extreme learning machine (VC-OSELM) is developed.•VC-OSELM automatically adds or removes hidden nodes (HN) as online learning proceeds.•VC-OSELM outperformed OSELM when the number of initial HN was smaller or larger than optimal.
