•Haplodiplosis marginata is a sporadic cereal pest with limited options for control.•Natural enemies of H. marginata are poorly studied and the predators unknown.•A PCR-based gut analysis assay to identify predators of H. marginata is presented.•For the first time, carabid natural enemies of H. marginata are identified.
