•Molecular functionalized sensors were elaborated by two steps modification.•Characterization of modified sensors was carried out by ATR-FTIR.•Testing the sensors under gases was performed at room temperature.•Ester modified SnO2 sensor was sensitive and selective to ammonia gas.
