•A combined cooling method of sublimation with transpiration is proposed.•Feasibility experiment is conducted under subsonic condition.•Sublimation coating provides a flexible way to locally activate transpiration.•Cooling effectiveness in stagnation region is well enhanced by locally sublimating coating layer.
