Grade and product quality control by microCT scanning of the world class Namakwa Sands Ti-Zr placer deposit West Coast, South Africa: An orientation study

•Case study of microCT analysis of heavy mineral sands.•Ability proven to quantify final product quality for this mine.•Grain size distribution analysed by new image analysis methodology allowing large statistical sampling for microCT.•Results in excellent agreement with routine methods in use by mine.•Additional information gained by microCT is demonstrated for heavy mineral sands.
