Correlation between BNP and NT-pro BNP in a Large Japanese Population with Stage A Heart Failure

Background: Both BNP and NT-pro BNP are useful for the diagnosis and management of heart failure. However, data are sparse regarding the correlation between these two biomarkers in a large sample. Method: We measured BNP and NT-pro BNP in 3643 high cardiovascular risk patients (mean age 65 11 years, 46% male, and 79% on antihypertensive medication) from the dataset of the J-HOP study. Results: In multiple linear regression, NT-pro BNP was significantly associated with BNP (standardized beta = 0.774, P < .001) after adjusted by standard cardiovascular risk factors. Even in stratified analyses according to cardiovascular risk factors, these associations were similar. Conclusions: Our findings showed that there was significantly correlation between BNP and NT-pro BNP in a large Japanese population with stage A heart failure.
