•Grain yield of YTH183 in tropical environments is 3–54% greater than IR 64.•Superior 1000-grain weight primarily contributes to yield advantage in YTH183.•A QTL controlling superior 1000-grain weight in YTH183 was identified on chromosome 5.•YTH183 is a promising genetic material for the enhancement of yield potential in rice.
