•The wavelet IONS index is useful in identifying and analyzing ionospheric disturbances.•Daytime VHF scintillation showed hourly dependence.•Atmospheric gravity waves could be related to these daytime IONS.•Many of W-index events were related to moderate geomagnetic storms.•Most of these geomagnetic storms were characterized by steeper falls of Dst.
