Evaluation of the space heating need in residential buildings at territorial scale: The case of Canton Ticino (CH)

•The heating needs of the residential buildings in the southern region of Switzerland were studied.•A simplified method was developed in order to estimate the heating needs.•The reliability of the method was demonstrated by the comparison to operative available data.•The method is applicable at district, municipal and regional scale.•Further developments of the method were outlined.
