摘要
•A theoretical analysis is made to understand the effects of variation in grain size.•A larger standard deviation of grain size leads to decreasing in both number of grains contained and the number of grains exposed.•Larger standard deviation of the grain size results in a wider protrusion but slower convergence.•The actual surface roughness could become several folds larger than the theoretical prediction when the grain size varies.
