•Excellent chlorine gas sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with Pt nanoparticles were fabricated utilizing photo-reduction method.•The gas sensors based on single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with Pt nanoparticles exhibit outstanding and highly selective chlorine detection.•Conducting channel modulation of single-walled carbon nanotubes by coexistence of Pt/PtO is the responsible mechanism.
