Simultaneous 2D hoist scheduling and production line design for multi-recipe and multi-stage material handling processes

•A novel cyclic scheduling model is developed to deal with problems in M3H processes.•Compact two dimensional production line is designed for the maximum production efficiency.•The allocation of processing units and the assignment of multi-processing capacity are simultaneously optimized.•Different types of jobs with different processing recipes are considered.
