•Age-related N400 and LPC alteration were correlated with verbal fluency.•Verbal fluency, intelligence were comparable between groups.•N400 reduction and LPC were found in older adults.•LPC did not correlate with performance.•A temporal-spatial dynamic change was found in older adults.
