Above and below-ground environmental changes associated with the use of photoselective protective netting to reduce sunburn in apple

•Netting reduced wind speed and incoming light radiation but not ambient air temperature.•Pearl and blue netting decreased soil temperature more than red netting and netting increased volumetric soil water content.•Netting reduced leaf and fruit surface temperature.•Netting strongly reduced sunburn incidence in Honeycrisp apple.
