•Combusted “Syngas” from de-oiled Pongamia cake by gasification used as heat source.•Maximum power output of 8.9W with single hybrid TEG at a ΔT of 200°C.•Power output, Voc of 27.38W & 19.08V obtained with three hybrid TEGs in series.•53.4%, 21.7% & 39.6% enhancement in power, voltage & current against Bi2Te3 module.
