•Selection of three BTV-specific antibodies using phage display technology.•Conversion of the antibodies to sandwich ELISA suitable recombinant antibody formats.•Direct detection of purified BTV-particles and BTV in serum of infected animals.•The developed sandwich ELISA system has a limit of detection of 104 TCID50/ml.
