摘要

•GEM strain rates for western and central Himalaya are compared with long term seismicity.•Kostrov’s formula is used for deriving seismic moment rates from strain rates.•We find a good match between geodetic strain rates and seismicity for the years 1900–2015.•For 1500–2015 we find a deficit likely to be caused by earthquake catalogue problems.
