Low incidence of acute hepatitis C virus infection among Southern Spanish HIV-infected individuals

•Data on incidence rates of acute HCV infection differ between European countries.•Contradictory data have been published concerning acute HCV infection in Spain.•Prospectively followed HIV-infected individuals were analysed in Southern Spain.•Incidences of both firstly acquired acute HCV infection and reinfection were low.•Ongoing risk practices were confirmed in both patients who presented AHCVI.
