Formation of hierarchical mesoporous silicon carbide from self-assembled block copolymer micelles

•A novel technique for synthesizing hierarchical mesoporous non-oxide SiC ceramics is proposed.•The mechanism relies on diblock copolymer self-assembling in selective solvent and polymer derived ceramics route.•The novel technique could also be used in other non-oxide material system.
