Automatic measurement of electromagnetic interference environment

Interference in the vicinity of wireless systems can cause serious degradation on radio communication performance. This may even result in disruptions and lost calls for communication systems or none or incorrect position for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers. For this purpose, a measurement system has earlier been developed with the aim to detect and log interference incidents. The measurement system has up to this point been designed for the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band and the GNSS band, where the radio transmission has relatively low signal levels. In this paper, we present solutions of how the already developed measurement system can be extended to incorporate several new functionalities. A solution of how the system can be extended to a multi-node system with a centralized database is presented, so that a larger area could be controlled. Furthermore, a method for interference classification is suggested that relies on simple measurement detectors. The classification is then proposed to be used to be able to separate real and intended radio transmissions from the interference data, so that interference detection can be performed in radio frequency bands, where radio transmissions with moderate power occasionally are present.
