Effects of Bothrops atrox venom and two isolated toxins on the human complement system: Modulation of pathways and generation of anaphylatoxins

•We evaluated the effects of B. atrox venom and two toxins on the complement system.•The venom and the metalloprotease Batroxase modulated all three activation pathways.•Both samples also promoted degradation of components and generated anaphylatoxins.•The phospholipase A2 BatroxPLA2 did not cleave components or generated anaphylatoxins.•Batroxase’s potential could validate its use as a complement research tool in the future.
