•ZVI microspheres may avoid iron sludge and pH adjustment in Fenton processes.•450W-UV and solar light led to the almost complete mineralization at acid pH.•Microspheres kept their structure with solar or 100W-UV light.•The 450W-UV treatment led to the almost total COD removal at initial neutral pH.
