•Insect impact outcomes at high speeds are investigated on liquid repellent coatings.•Three different insect residue types are identified and analyzed.•Superhydrophobic surfaces are found to mitigate insect residue adhesion.•Oleophobicity is found to reduce the adhesion of exoskeleton parts.
