Methionine restriction improves renal insulin signalling in aged kidneys

•MR diet decreases glucose levels and enhances renal insulin signaling in aged mice.•Dietary MR increases renal lipogenic and decreases gluconeogenic gene expression.•MR diet upregulates renal UCP1, FGF21, bKlotho and cytoprotective gene expression.•Renal pro-inflammatory gene expression is not upregulated by MR diet.•Long-term MR diet offers some protection against age-related renal damage.
