•A peptide derived from Amaranthus hypochondriacus alleviated experimental food allergy.•The oral administration of the peptide suppressed IgE secretion and Th2 cytokines.•Skin tests were negative in treated animals.•Local and systemic parameters of inflammation were controlled.
