Stability index of algebras with involution

In this note we give a self-contained presentation of signatures of hermitian forms over simple algebras with involution with respect to orderings on the base field of the algebra. We then introduce and study the stability group, stability index and reduced Witt group of simple algebras with involution and show in particular that they exhibit properties that are similar to those of the equivalent concepts in the field case.
