•P[Ox] is lower in contemporary HD patients as compared to historical controls.•P[AA] up to 100μM may not increase the risk of secondary oxalosis in HD patients.•Survival rates were not lower in patients with pre-HD P[Ox] ≥20 or ≥30μM.•The safety and efficacy of AA supplementation in ESRD need to be studied further.
