•Angled fish occasionally lose equilibrium and are unable to swim away from the angler.•We tested the efficacy of two commonly employed assisted ventilation techniques.•Neither technique facilitated physiological or behavioural recovery.•It is advisable to retain fish with minimal handling until equilibrium returns.
