The Prevention of Osteoporosis-State of the Art 1995

In the future, attention must be directed to possible means of preventing and treating osteoporosis. However, prevention and treatment have to be preceded by diagnosis and it is, therefore, of the greatest importance that available diagnostic possibilities are optimized and used. For prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the mainstay. Intranasal calcitonin is now available in a number of countries, giving clinicians a wider range of therapeutic options. Estrogen analogues and bisphosphonates are currently under investigation and it is hoped will add several options for the individual patient in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
