Improving the management of coexistence between GM and non-GM maize with a spatially explicit model of cross-pollination

•We compared distance-based and process model (MAPOD®) based coexistence methods.•The process model-based coexistence method allowed a higher percentage of GM maize.•The model-based method followed the farmer’s field intended allocations more closely.•The use of MAPOD® resulted in better discrimination and greater flexibility.
