The Impact Of Adopting Ec Recommendations On Indoor Radon

The aim of this paper is: (1) to analyse the main factors which can influence actions to control radon concentration in dwellings; and (2) to examine the basic parameters to be considered in the choice of reference levels for remediations. The dwelling characteristics, the regulatory system and the present knowledge about radon concentration indoors in Italy are discussed. From the data of the National Survey obtained so far, a first assessment of the percentage of dwellings exceeding 400 Bq.m-3 is presented. Different countries could set different reference levels depending on their own balance between health risks and social-economic impact of the remedial actions. However, it appears advisable that the procedures for this choice could stem from the same logic. To reach this goal possible approaches and comparisons among risks are analysed. In conclusion, the levels suggested by the EC are deemed a useful tool to introduce the radon protection problem in Italy.
